Abelita Mateus

Living in New York since 2012, Abelita has become immersed in the jazz scene and is applying the “new sounds” into her recent work as a performer and composer. In 2014, Abelita started composing for her latest project, “Mixed Feelings,” which is a fusion of her samba and bossa nova roots with contemporary jazz. In 2016 she had the great opportunity to record the "Mixed Feelings" Project with the great  Peter Slavov on bass, Alex Kautz on drums, Matt Marantz on saxophone, Romero Lubambo on guitar and Phillip Gillette on percussion and drums. Also in 2016 she composed new songs and recorded her new Project "Vivenda," which is a mix of some of her compositions and compositions of the great Brazilian composers Tom Jobim, Djavan and Gilberto Gil.

 

Abelita recorded the "Vivenda" project with the wonderful Romero Lubambo on guitar, Claudio Roditi on trumpet, Itaiguara Brandão on bass, Portinho on drums, Adriano Santos on drums and Phillip Gillette on percussion. Abelita is also the pianist and singer of the Chameleon Music Trio, with Phillip Gillette on drums and Daseul Kim on bass.

Mateus released her debut album Vivenda in 2017 (co-produced by and featuring guitarist Romero Lubambo), which reached the 24th position on the Jazz Week Charts.

In 2018 her second album Mixed Feelings was nominated to the Grammy in three categories; Best Latin Jazz Album, Best Engineered Album- Non-Classical, and Best Instrumental Composition.

 

Abelita is currently the pianist for the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience, directed by Dizzy Gillespie alumni John Lee. She has been performed recently at international venues including the Blue Note New York, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco, Ronnie Scott’s in London, the Luna Classics and Musig Am Zurisee Jazz Festivals in Switzerland, as well as various venues in São Paulo, Brazil. In the New York area, Abelita has been playing with world class musicians such as John Lee, Claudio Roditi, Tommy Campbell, Sharel Cassity, the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, Peter Slavov, Alex Kautz, Matt Marantz,  among others.

Pianista e cantora de São Paulo, Brasil, Abelita Mateus é apaixonada pela música brasileira e Jazz. Ela começou seus estudos de piano erudito em sua adolescência, e gradualmente desenvolveu uma paixão pelo jazz, que a levou para os EUA para fazer o seu Mestrado em Jazz Performance na William Paterson University. No Brasil, ela se apresentou com grandes artistas como Vinicius Dorin, Raul de Souza e Hermeto Pascoal. Vivendo em Nova York desde 2012, Abelita ingressou ao cenário do jazz e está aplicando essa nova experiência e "novos sons" em seu recente trabalho como artista e compositora. Em 2014, Abelita começou a compor para seu primeiro projeto, "Mixed Feelings", que é uma fusão de suas raízes de samba e bossa nova com o jazz contemporâneo.

Em 2016 teve a grande oportunidade de gravar o seu primeiro projeto "Mixed Feelings" com grandes músicos, Peter Slavov no baixo, Alex Kautz na bateria, Matt Marantz no saxofone, Romero Lubambo na guitarra e Phillip Gillette na percussão e bateria. Também em 2016 compôs novas músicas e gravou seu mais recente projeto "Vivenda", que inclui algumas de suas composições e composições dos grandes compositores brasileiros Tom Jobim, Djavan e Gilberto Gil.

Abelita gravou o projeto "Vivenda" com os maravilhosos Romero Lubambo na guitarra, Claudio Roditi no trompete, Itaiguara Brandão no baixo, Portinho na bateria, Adriano Santos na bateria e Phillip Gillette na percussão. Abelita é também pianista e cantora do Chameleon Music Group, com Phillip Gillette na bateria e Daseul Kim no baixo.

 

Mateus lançou seu primeiro álbum Vivenda em 2017 (co-produzido por e apresentando o guitarrista Romero Lubambo), que alcançou a 24ª posição no Jazz Week Charts. Em 2018 seu segundo álbum Mixed Feelings foi indicado ao Grammy em três categorias; Melhor Álbum de Jazz Latino, Melhor Álbum de Engenharia - Não-Clássico e Melhor Composição Instrumental.

 

Mateus é atualmente pianista da Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience, dirigida por John Lee. Com a Dizzy Gillespie Afro Cuban e com seu trio Abelita se apresentou em lugares como o Blue Note New York, o Kennedy Center em Washington DC, o Hollywood Bowl em Los Angeles, o Yoshi's Jazz Club em San Francisco, o Ronnie Scott em Londres, o Luna Classics e Musig Am Zurisee Jazz Festivals Na Suíça, bem como em vários locais em São Paulo, Brasil. Em Nova York Abelita tem tocado com músicos incríveis como John Lee, Claudio Roditi, Tommy Campbell, Sharel Cassity, Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, Peter Slavov, Alex Kautz, Matt Marantz, entre outros.
